AMSC Community Gathers for Islamic Seminar on The Best Teachings of the Holy Month of Ramadhan
Brgy. Bagoaingud, Ditsaan- Ramain, Adiong Memorial State College — The AMSC Open Gymn served as the venue for an insightful seminar titled "The Best Teachings of the Holy Month of Ramadhan" held on March 5 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The event offered all faculty, students and employees a meaningful opportunity to deepen their understanding of both the spiritual and practical teachings associated with the holy month.
Hosted by Mr. Ehsan Ahmad from the College of Agriculture, the program began with a Quran reading by Mr. Fahaman Hadjijamel, a student from the College of Forestry, followed by President Sherifa Rohannie K. Adiong who delivered the opening remarks, and welcomed attendees to the educational session.
The featured speaker was just one of the Islamic students studying in Malaysia and Singapore, or from these nations studying abroad, he experienced a blend of strong, traditional, religious education and global exposure. Sheik Abdulhakeem Muhammad Al-Marawi, detailed the specific invalidators (batal) of fasting, which include intentional eating, drinking, gagging, and forced vomiting. The seminar clarified that while intentional acts break the fast, accidentally eating or drinking because one has forgotten does not invalidate it, though the individual must stop immediately upon remembering.
A significant portion of the discussion focused on the moral conduct required to preserve the fast's spiritual value. Sheik Al-Marawi emphasized that the reward of fasting can be destroyed by negative behaviors such as anger (karangit), lying (kapamrak), backbiting (kapakasodi), and envy (kapakatipo). Additionally, attendees were reminded to avoid watching or listening to forbidden things, known as kailay or kapamakin'g sa haram. Avoiding these bad habits is essential to ensure the fast retains its religious significance.
The seminar also briefly addressed the categories of persons exempted from fasting as part of its comprehensive overview. Exemptions from fasting during Ramadan are granted to individuals for whom the practice poses a health risk or significant hardship. Key groups exempt include the sick or ill (both temporary and chronic), travelers on long-distance journeys, elderly individuals who cannot handle the physical strain, and children who have not yet reached puberty.
Additionally, women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, menstruating, or experiencing post-natal bleeding are also exempt, as are individuals with mental health conditions that make fasting difficult or impossible. The event concluded with closing remarks provided by Prof. Aleem Sanussi Pandapatan at exactly 11 o’clock in the morning.
